Do you have Stretch Marks?

There are times in our lives when we may gain or lose weight quickly resulting in the development of stretch marks. Stretch marks affect both men and women and are quite common during pregnancy, adolescence, and among body builders. So, if you have them, you are not alone. Quite often the marks appear on the breasts, thighs, hips, and buttocks.

Stretch marks are actually the result of excess collagen production within the skin's structure. When a person rapidly gains weight, the skin stretches excessively and its elasticity is broken down. It is this expansion that signals the body to make more collagen, causing a "scar" or accumulation of collagen.

When stretch marks first appear, they will be reddish or purplish in appearance and over time they will fade to be white or flesh in color. Some stretch marks fade over time and are barely recognizable. There are many products on the market today that claim to make stretch marks completely disappear. The truth is that only plastic surgery or a micro-dermabrasion program can make them disappear entirely. Of course, these kinds of treatments can be costly with possible risk involved.

There is evidence, though, that stretch marks can be prevented from forming in the first place by following a good diet and keeping the body well hydrated with water. Most importantly, stretch marks can be prevented if weight gain or loss is very steady. Keep in mind that genetics plays a role in the development of some stretch marks, and there is nothing we can do about this.

There is also confirmation that the appearance of stretch marks can be improved, especially when newly formed and appearing red or purple in color. Research has shown that applying certain ingredients to stretch marks will support proper skin nutrition, dissipate excess collagen, and help skin to maintain it's firmness. The ingredients should be massaged into the stretch mark at least once daily in circular strokes, and along the length of the marks for many months to achieve results.

There are many products that claim their ingredients will make your stretch marks magically disappear. Take care when applying products to your body. Find out exactly what they are, if there are any side affects, and if they are safe during pregnancy. Look for products that contain Vitamin E, wheat germ oil and other natural ingredients that help to support the skin. Finally, remember that if you have stretch marks, you aren't alone.
